To launch the season, the RLPO’s principal oboe, Jonathan Small and Manchester-based pianist, Ian Buckle offer a survey of English and French music from this and the last century. Rightly praised as a leading international player, Jonathan will display the full range of his instrument’s colours and expressive qualities. The programme explores music of two nations, both allies and rivals, and contrasts solo items for both performers. The festival has also commissioned a new work from Jonathan’s son, Michael who studies composition at the Royal Northen College of Music.
